What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

The short answer

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of shaping your pages so search engines and AI tools can use them as the answer to a question. In practice that means a direct answer at the top, questions as headings and facts with sources. It builds on SEO, and it covers featured snippets, AI answers and voice replies.

What is answer engine optimization?

An answer engine is any tool that answers a question instead of only listing links. A featured snippet in Google is one. So is an AI answer in ChatGPT, or a voice assistant reading a reply aloud.

AEO is the work of making your page the one these tools use. You write so the answer can be lifted cleanly, and you make sure the page can be reached and trusted.

None of it is a trick. It is clear writing on pages that search engines can already find.

How does AEO relate to SEO and GEO?

What work does AEO involve?

  • Answer first. The opening 40 to 60 words answer the question the page is named for.
  • Questions as headings. Each H2 is a question a buyer asks. Each section answers one idea.
  • Short paragraphs. Three sentences or fewer, so any paragraph can be quoted alone.
  • Facts with sources. Every number shows where it came from and when it was checked.
  • The same facts everywhere. One name, one description and one set of prices across your pages and profiles.
  • Pages that can be reached. Crawlable and indexed, with a snippet allowed.

Where does Google’s guidance stand?

Google treats this work as SEO. Its guide to generative AI search says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in Google Search.

Its AI features page adds one condition. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

The guide also asks for a unique point of view, and warns against recycling what others already said. That is why first-hand content matters.

How we track AEO for clients

We start every account with a list of the questions its buyers ask. Then we ask them in the AI tools those buyers use, and save every answer with its date.

That first run is the baseline. Each later run is compared with it: who gets named, and which pages get cited. Answers change from day to day, which is why the dates matter.

How many questions we track depends on the plan: 25 on Starter, 50 on Growth and 100 on Scale. Read more on our generative engine optimization page.

Checklist: answer-first pages

  1. A direct answer at the top. The first 40 to 60 words answer the page’s question.
  2. Questions as headings. Each H2 is a question a buyer asks.
  3. Sources and dates. Every number shows both.
  4. A snippet allowed. No nosnippet on pages you want quoted.

Answer engine optimization: questions

What does AEO stand for?

Answer engine optimization: shaping your pages so search engines and AI tools can use them as the answer to a question.

Is AEO different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. The base is the same: pages that can be found, read and trusted. AEO changes the shape of the page, with the answer first and every claim sourced.

Do I need llms.txt for AEO?

Not for Google. Its guide says Google Search ignores llms.txt files. Some other AI services may read one, so it is an optional extra, not a ranking factor.

Can AEO guarantee my brand appears in AI answers?

No. AI answers change from day to day and from person to person. AEO makes your pages easier to use as an answer, and tracking shows what changes, with dates.
