How to rank in ChatGPT: five steps that make you easier to cite

The short answer

To show up in ChatGPT answers, let OpenAI’s search crawler reach your site, make your facts clear and consistent, and write pages that answer buyer questions at the top, with sources. Being described the same way on other sites helps too. Nobody can promise a place in the answers, so track the results with dates.

Can you rank in ChatGPT?

Not the way you rank in Google. ChatGPT search writes an answer and cites sources inside it, and the answer can change from one day to the next.

What you can do is make your pages easy for it to reach, understand and cite. The steps below are the ones that matter most.

Step 1: let OpenAI’s search crawler in

OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs. Its search crawler is called OAI-SearchBot, and robots.txt controls it.

OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. It also says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to take effect.

Step 2: make your facts clear

An AI tool names a business it can describe with confidence. Use one name and one short description on your site, and repeat them on your profiles.

Put your prices, location and services in plain text on the page. A fact hidden in an image or a PDF is easy to miss.

Step 3: answer the question at the top

  • The answer first. The opening 40 to 60 words answer the question the page is named for.
  • Questions as headings. Each H2 is a question a buyer asks.
  • One idea per paragraph. Any paragraph can then be quoted on its own.
  • The text in the HTML. Content that only appears after a script runs may be missed.

Step 4: back every claim with a source

A number with its source and date can be checked, by a buyer and by a tool. A number with no source is easy to doubt.

Publish what only you can show: your own data, your method and dated examples. Google’s guide to AI search asks for the same, a unique point of view instead of recycled content.

Step 5: be described the same way elsewhere

AI tools read more than your site. Profiles on directories and reviews on sites you do not control describe you from the outside.

Keep those profiles real and up to date, with the same facts as your site. Planted mentions do not help: Google’s guide says inauthentic mentions are not as helpful as they might seem.

Checklist: ChatGPT basics

  1. OAI-SearchBot allowed. Check your robots.txt.
  2. One name, one description. On your site and every profile.
  3. The answer first. On every page you want cited.
  4. A dated baseline. Your buyer questions, asked in ChatGPT, answers saved with the date.

How to tell if it is working

Write down the questions your buyers ask. Ask them in ChatGPT on a set day, and save every answer with the date.

Repeat on the same day each month and compare. You see whether your brand is named, and which of your pages get cited. This is how we track it for clients in our AI search work for ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Ranking in ChatGPT: questions

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Not in the answers themselves. What you can control is whether OpenAI’s search crawler can reach your pages, and how clear and quotable those pages are.

Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?

No. GPTBot is the training crawler. Search uses OAI-SearchBot, which robots.txt controls separately.

How long does it take to show up?

A robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to take effect, OpenAI says. Being named in answers takes longer and is never certain, which is why the results are tracked with dates.

Is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?

Mostly not. Both need pages that can be reached, read and trusted. ChatGPT adds its own crawler to allow, and its answers change more from day to day.
